Bed manufacturer Sealy UK, part of the Silentnight Group, has confirmed it will close its Aspatria factory, impacting more than 260 jobs.
According to reports, Sealy said the profitability of the facility had declined for a number of years, while the situation had worsened due to impact of coronavirus.
Union GMB also confirmed it has started the process of arranging a consultation with the business as 267 staff at the factory, which first opened back in 1967, facing redundancy.
At this stage it is unclear on how long the consultation period will last but the priority is to support all affected employees.
The 160,000sq ft factory made around 3,500 mattresses a week during its peak operation.
