Former garden furniture warehouse manager admits theft charge

A former employee of family home and garden furniture business R E Dawson has admitted stealing a number of products to a value of over £3,000.

Appearing before Burnley Crown Court, Gordon Hammett was in the position of warehouse manager where he stole garden furniture which included deck chairs, a swing set, a corner sofa, table and benches.

Back in 2018, the business conducted an internal investigation which resulted in police searching the home of Mr Hammett where the stolen items were discovered. The total value of the items was £3,495.

Mr Hammett told the court that he took the items under the belief that damaged goods not fit for sale could be taken under a company policy.

However, there was no such policy in place and on inspection of the goods, they were each fit for sale.

Mr Hammett admitted to taking the items and was charged with theft. He was sentenced to eight months, suspended for 18 months, as well as being ordered to complete 80 hours of unpaid work and take a rehabilitation course.
